What a Water Softener Does
A water softener is designed to solve one specific problem: hard water.

A salt-based water softener works through a process called ion exchange. RO works by forcing water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with pores so small that only water molecules pass through. Virtually everything else — dissolved minerals, heavy metals, nitrates, chlorine, bacteria, viruses, and most other contaminants — is rejected and flushed away.
The result is water that is as close to pure H₂O as you can get from a home treatment system. Most RO systems also include pre-filters (sediment and carbon) and a post-filter (carbon polishing) to further improve taste and protect the membrane.

The difference is most obvious in taste. RO water tastes clean and neutral — no chlorine aftertaste, no mineral flavor, no sulfur smell. Many homeowners who install RO systems stop buying bottled water entirely. Cooking with RO water also produces noticeably better results, particularly for coffee, tea, and anything where water flavor matters.
The Key Difference: Point of Entry vs. Point of Use
This is the most important distinction to understand.
A water softener is a point-of-entry system. It is installed at your main water line, treating every drop of water that enters your home — every shower, every faucet, your dishwasher, your washing machine, your water heater. The entire home benefits.
A reverse osmosis system is a point-of-use system. It is typically installed under the kitchen sink, treating only the water at that specific tap (and sometimes a refrigerator line). The rest of your home — showers, laundry, dishwasher, water heater — receives untreated water.
This is why the two systems are not interchangeable. An RO system under your sink does nothing to prevent limescale from building up in your water heater or washing machine. A water softener throughout your home does not produce the ultra-pure drinking water that an RO system delivers.

The combination of a whole-home softener and an under-sink RO system gives you the best of both worlds: protected appliances and plumbing throughout the house, and exceptionally clean drinking water at the kitchen tap.
A Note on Salt-Free Conditioners
You may have seen "salt-free water softeners" marketed as an alternative. These are technically water conditioners, not softeners — they use a process called Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) to change the structure of hardness minerals so they are less likely to form scale, without actually removing them from the water.
Salt-free conditioners can reduce scale buildup and are a reasonable option for homeowners who want to avoid salt or live in areas with sodium restrictions. However, they do not produce the same soft-water feel as a salt-based softener, and they are generally less effective at very high hardness levels.
